(I guessed blank and it gave me a warning about missing
$HOME/.cvspass so I figured it didn't work but...I got by
it by just executing the checkout without worrying about
the password.)

I have autoconf, automake, libtool:

  autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
  automake (GNU automake) 1.4-p6
  ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.20 (1.1220.2.287 2005/08/31 18:54:15)

Then running autogen.sh produced an error (see below).

(First thing I see is suggesting to add my aclocal.m4 to
the on in the current directory and I am trying to figure
out "how" to do that -- just paste it in? Before or After?
It looks like structured 'code' so such a naive method is
not likely to work...trying anyway...)
